Miguel Freitas

Since July 2017, Miguel Freitas is the Secretary of State of Forestry and Rural Development. He graduated in Agricultural Engineering from the Universidade de Évora and he earned a European Mater's Degree in Fruits and Vegetables from the École Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Montpellier (France). He was a professor at the Universidade do Algarve since 1991. Between 1996 and 1998, he has held the position of Algarve Regional Director of Agriculture, and from 1998 to 2000, he was General Director of Rural Development and President of the National Monitoring Committee of European Community Initiative LEADER II. For the next three years, he served as vice-president of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission. Elected Member of the Parliament during the X, XI and XII Government. In September 2006, Miguel Freitas worked at the Portuguese Permanent Representation to the UE (Brussels), as agriculture and sea coordinator, during the Portuguese Presidency of the UE, where he chaired also the Especial Committee on Agriculture of the UE.
